Eggs, Dairy, Soft Foods & Puddings

Have you ever wondered how to use fresh, raw eggs, butter, cheese, milk, cream and curds & whey? For you who strive to return to these “natural” soft foodstuffs, 19th Century Receipts Volume 4 is what you've been seeking! It is a fascinating look at how housekeepers provided these and other nourishing soft dishes to their charges in the 1800s.

Part 1, in addition to egg and dairy receipts, also introduces categories of substantial “soft foods” that were commonly known and loved 150 years ago. Farinaceous foods, panadas, porridges, gruels, mushes & caudles are all here, as well as nourishing “Jellies for the Dinner Table or for Invalids”.

Part 2 is a fascinating, in-depth look at a category of natural foods that has today, for the most part, passed from popularity in America – Puddings! Now you can once again welcome these vegetable, fruit, nut, meat and sweet puddings to your dinner table – as great main- or side- or dessert-dishes. Whether you want to boil, steam, or bake them, puddings of all kinds are here, including the more famous Christmas, plum and bread puddings we sometimes still see today.

Doing without these great soft foods and puddings today is like throwing the baby out with the bath water. Restoring them to your kitchen and dining table is the only way to fix that!!

19th Century Receipts Volume 5:
Meats, Fish & Fowl

19th Century Receipts Volume 5 is a major research reference that details more than you probably ever thought of asking about meats, fish and fowl. The largest of the 10 books in this series, Meats, Fish & Fowl takes a thorough look at these categories of foods.

Part 1 contains 19th century instructions on everything from curing, carving & cooking fresh meats & fish, to preserving and keeping meats (including meat pickles), to general categories of miscellaneous meat receipts. You'll find details for making minced meats, mincemeat, rissoles, sausages, forcemeats, sweetbreads, stuffings, meat puddings, meat & fish pies, and meat & fish cakes, patties and croquettes.

Part 2 records a huge variety of receipts and cooking instructions for beef, veal, venison, mutton, lamb, pork, hare & rabbit.

Part 3 deals with fish and fowl receipts. It contains both domestic and wild fowl recipes (yes, chicken, turkey, goose and game birds are all here). Fish receipts are here too, including a few for eels, frogs & turtles, and shell fish..

19th Century Receipts Volume 6:
From Soups to Salads

Soups, Gravies, & Sauces
Fruits, Vegetables & Salads

19th Century Receipts, Volume 6, includes everything from Soups, Gravies, & Sauces to Fruits, Vegetables & Salads.

Part 1 presents gravies and sauces, which as every cook knows, are often meal-makers. Whether your cooking includes vegetables, meats or both, gravies and sauces have long been favorite additions to a wide variety of dishes.

Likewise, meat and meatless soups are as popular today as they were yesterday – and most would agree that homemade varieties are vastly superior to our modern chemically altered and preserved canned or packaged products. Besides, there is almost nothing better than a home full of the delicious odor of a great soup simmering away on the stove. Everything you need to know about making gravies, sauces, soups, stocks, and straining with a Tammy Cloth is included, along with a huge number of time-tested recipes to suit any taste.

Part 2 contains a wonderful assortment of receipts for gathering, cleaning, keeping and eating fresh fruits, vegetables, salads and salad dressings that will enliven any dinner table, meat or meatless. (Canning fruits and vegetables is described in Volume 7.)

19th Century Receipts Volume 7:
The Confectionery

&
The Store Closet Sugars, Jams, Jellies & Preserves

A Confection is any kind of candy or other sweet preparation (including ice cream and sweet preserves). When you shop for candy, you go to the store – but when you shop for original authentic recipes describing how to cook sugar, create delightful natural candies, and make sweet preserves, you reach for 19th Century Receipts, Volume 7, the Confectionery.

Since sweet preserves usually end up in the Store Closet, the rest of the store closet is also described in this volume in Part 2 – including how to can pickles (both fruit and vegetable pickles), vinegars, bottled sauces, and condiments, along with descriptions and uses of the spices, seasonings, essences, colorings and storage miscellany common in the 1800s. Your greatgrandmothers knew how to please their family's taste buds with both sweets and sours, and now you can discover how they did it, and re-create them in your own 21st century kitchen!

(And, since Ice Creams are not stored in the Store Closet, see them in Volume 2, Pastry, Pies, Cakes & Desserts.).

19th Century Receipts Volume 8:
Beverages, Cider, Beer & Spirits

19th Century Receipts, Volume 8 contains a huge variety of beverages, both hot and cold, both non-alcoholic and alcoholic alike. In addition to items you would naturally expect – coffees, teas, egg, milk and chocolate drinks –

Part 1 re-introduces to Americans how to create waters, ginger ale, carbonated drinks, sherbets, vinegars, and water ices, flavored with delicious natural fruit syrups made in your own kitchen.

Part 2 gives modern home-brewing a whole new perspective – from cider and perry to beer and ale, to mead, brandies, cordials, liqueurs, spirits, wines and honey wines, these recipes will augment whatever knowledge you are accumulating or acquiring and enrich your beverage experiences.

A modern folksy approach to beverages in this historic era makes this book as fascinating to read as to use.

19th Century Receipts Volume 9:
Household Hints

19th Century Receipts, Volume 9 is chock full of household recipes for just about anything you can imagine. How did they deal with bugs and varmints in the 1800s? Lamplight? Ventilation? What sachets or disinfectants or glues and cements did they use? How did they make soaps and household cleansers and polishes and oils and stain removers?

What crafts did they enjoy? Inks? What about the laundry? Fabrics, dyes? What grooming aids were popular? Pomades? Cold creams? Hair washes? Cosmetics? Perfumes? For fun reading, you won't want to miss this treasure-house of information about the typical 19th century home and every day living. You might even discover whether or not to choose, use or adapt these wonderful original authentic recipes to your 21st century life. The choice is yours!

19th century sources include the famous Godey's Lady's Book and Magazine, Grand-ma-ma of all of today's women's magazines (1830 – mid-1890s), The Household Cyclopedia of General Information (1881), and more.

19th Century Receipts Volume 10:
The Sickroom & Health

19th Century Receipts, Volume 10 is included in this collection for historical research purposes only. No history of 19th century living would be complete without a discussion of their health matters.

Part 1, The Sickroom, describes the sickroom itself, accidents, health conditions and illnesses typical of the period, and health maintenance, including essential and other oils, essences and tinctures that were popular at the time.

Part 2 reveals how health in the human body was maintained or corrected by our ancestors, some 150 years ago.

No medical or health advice is intended or implied in this or any of the volumes in this comprehensive collection of authentic 19th Century Receipts.

The Nature Cure Cookbook

The Nature Cure Cookbook is Part 1 of what was originally published in 1915 as a 2-part book by Mrs. Anna and Henry Lindlahr, M.D.. We have chosen to not reprint Part 2, the A B C of Natural Dietetics, in favor of bringing to you the first part of this remarkable book under its own title.

The Lindlahrs, who believed and taught that a natural diet is sufficient to keep one in perfect condition, operated a health Sanitarium in Elmhurst, Illinois from 1914-1928, on 8 beautiful acres in a country-like atmosphere, where they offered advanced training in natural medicine and nursing, as well as popular in-residence “Nature Cure” treatments, including the recipes you find here. For years, Dr. Lindlahr offered “personal advice on diet as well as other natural methods of living and of treatment .” One brochure stated, “No Surgery, No Drugs, No Serums.”

Though they widely promoted and used vegetarian foods, the Lindlahrs prepared this extensive yet simple cookbook with over 900 natural foods recipes for vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike – and now, 100 years later, it still is a modern treasury of natural foods cookery and still stands worthy of use by anyone who desires to return to a clean and natural foods diet.

They created this unique cookbook by dividing all food materials into 5 groups – Starches, Sugars, Fats, Proteids, and Mineral Elements. Every recipe is marked to show what elements it contains, in the order of their amounts and importance. With this remarkable aid, you can now create your own specialized diet and tailor it to your personal needs.

Whether you are a veteran chef, or first learning how to cook real all-natural food, this is definitely the book for you.

This book is not intended to diagnose, treat or operate for any medical condition. Use at your own risk.

My Recipe Box

Although the wondrous sweet treats my mother made for us younguns live together inside My Recipe Box alongside a few of my own old favorites from the 1970s, hers date back 60 to 80 years, and a handful have survived their 100th birthday.

These old friends have one thing in common – they are yesteryear's trendy version of rich mouth-watering sweet fast-foods. Some are truly “made from scratch” creations with natural wholesome foods, but most of them are quick and easy desserts, snacks, candies and sweet salads that combine ready-made ingredients with delicious things like real sugar, butter, cream, whipped cream, and cream cheese.

So, if you crave homemade goodies that are fun to make and as sweet as your taste-buds imagine they are, you've found them! Delicious and Historically correct, these desert recipes are not politically correct. Use at your own risk and pleasure. You have been warned.

God, The Universe, and Darwin

Today millions of people believe the universe, the Earth, and all life evolved randomly according to the theory of evolution proposed by Charles Darwin. Most people, though, are unaware that even though there is clear and and compelling evidence to the contrary, Darwin's theory's are still being accepted by academia as non-disputable fact. Most people are also unaware that there is no clear empirical evidence or math to support his theory. Because of these facts, there is a growing legion of scientists who have completely rejected Darwinian evolution as not only highly improbable but scientifically unprovable.

If you have ever asked "Where did I come from?" and "Why am I here?" you will find it hard to put "God, The Universe And Darwin" down. This exciting new book about man's origins contains new evidence and questions never before seen or discussed along with new cutting edge discoveries that put Darwin's theories in the hot seat.

The Pilgrim's Progress
From
This World
To
That which is to come:
Delivered under the Similitude of a
DREAM
Wherein is Discovered,
The manner of his setting out,
His Dangerous Journey; And
safe Arrival at the Desired Countrey.

The Pilgrims Progress is a historical masterpiece from 1678. The story begins as a vivid dream about a man named Christian who is tormented by spiritual anguish. A guide named Evangelist visits Christian and urges him to press on to the Celestial City and claim his reward. Thus Christian's adventure begins.

John Bunyan began this work while in county prison for violations of the now archaic Conventicle Act, which prohibited the holding of religious services not recognized by the Church of England. Because of this, the book is famous for its insight into the religious freedom and mindset of many early American colonists.

In spite all the critical literary evaluations over the last 300 years, The Pilgrim's Progress stands alone among the Classics – it is both religious, and it is popular. Translated into more than 200 languages, it has been constantly loved by generations of readers because of the sincere urgency of Bunyan's religious thought and the vivid clarity of his prose..

The Cherokee Physician
or
Indian Guide to Health

Welcome to the Cherokee Physician, a natural healing system recorded in 1857 by Richard Foreman, a Cherokee doctor who committed it to paper after “having personally tested the efficacy of their remedies, in the cure of diseases...”

He wrote, “The Aborigines of our country found the means of mitigating and curing their [most common] diseases...they knew nothing of foreign drugs, but [did it] with roots, herbs, and plants found in their own country...such as can be procured in almost any part of the United States.”

It includes general rules for preserving health without the use of medicines – details about the Diseases of the United States, with their symptoms, causes, and means of prevention, explained in simple terms – brief descriptions of Anatomy, and Herbs, Roots and Plants, “the medicinal virtues of which have hitherto been unknown to the whites” – and a short Dispensatory.

This book is not intended to diagnose, treat or operate for any medical condition. Use at your own risk.

The Old Root and Herb Doctor
or
The Indian Way of Healing

Because we believe that original information about roots and herbs is invaluable today, the true and accurate contents of this wonderful book have been re-formatted and typeset to protect, preserve and promote their place among authentic American Indian herbal lore.

Dr. John Goodale Briante reported this Indian Method of Healing in 1870, giving directions for preparing and using these Indian Remedies he himself used.

He wrote, “The Remedies given may be relied upon, and are the result of a long and careful study of the system followed by the natives of this country, whose singular success in the treatment of disease is well known.” These are the same he used during a successful practice of thirty years among the St. Francis Tribe of Indians, at Green Bay; also, for several years with the Pottawattamies and other Tribes.

This book is not intended to diagnose, treat or operate for any medical condition. Use at your own risk.

The Drug Story

Standard Oil was created by John D. Rockefeller in 1870. In less than 11 years it owned and controlled nearly all oil production and refining in America. While publicly renowned as a fearless and ruthless businessman, privately his political and financial influence extended into all levels of governments. But when Standard's monopoly was broken in 1911, this all came to a stop. So Rockefeller switched gears. He created the Rockefeller Trust, which bought controlling
interests in pharmaceutical companies, and today controls all “legal” drug manufacturing and sales world wide.

This book is Morris A. Bealle's detailed warning of how the trust and its operatives accomplish their plunder of this most profitable and powerful segment of American healthcare. He begins with a quote: “I firmly believe that if the whole materia medica could be sunk to the bottom of the sea, it would be all the better for mankind and all the worse for the fishes.” Today we can see that it should have been sunk.

Medical Mussolini
A Comprehensive Text Book
On Humanity’s Scourge –
Medical Politics

In 1945 Morris A. Bealle, Editor of Plain Talk Magazine wrote, “Medical Politics has raised a cross which the entire medical profession must bear. Worse still, it has given the hordes of 'New' Deal professors down in Washington, egged on by the paid staffs of the Rockefeller Foundation and Rockefeller-endowed medical colleges, an excuse and inspiration to try to steer us right into socialized, or regimented, medicine."

Then, in 1971 Richard Nixon declared war on cancer. Since that, thousands of billions of dollars – more money than was spent putting a man on the moon – had been spent on research to “cure” cancer. Yet today, cancer has never been defeated. Why is it still the number one killer of American citizens? Where did all the money go? And why do pharmaceutical companies advertise their drugs on American TV, when it is not allowed in other countries?

Brace yourself! Bealle's expose of how the American healthcare system has been hijacked answers these questions and much more!

A Tale of the State of Things

This fun, fictional spoof on politics, politicians, and how the foundation of government suffers from Legalese was written around real legal definitions drawn from Black's Law Dictionary. It is a fact consistent with truth in all of life, that things are never what they seem. Including this Fairy Tale.

The American Crisis

The American Crisis is a powerful pamphlet series written by one of America's least appreciated founding fathers, Thomas Paine. Paine originally wrote and published the pamphlets between 1776 to 1783.

George Washington was so moved by Paine's words that he ordered his officers to read the December 1776 issue to the entire Continental Army prior to going into battle, before he crossed the Delaware on his way to victory at Trenton, New Jersey.

Paine's first pamphlet began with the immortal line "THESE are the times that try men's souls."

Overall, the pamphlets bolstered the morale of the colonies and the Continental Congress while starkly illustrating to the English people the Crown's abuse of power in the Americas. As a consequence of Paine's writings and the colonies' resolve, England finally gave up its efforts to quell their break for independence, and the colonies emerged victorious as the United States of America..

Common Sense

Thomas Paine is in our estimation the least appreciated of the founding fathers of America. More than anything or anyone else, his writings were responsible for the colonies' united decision to break from England.

The two works he conceived and published in Boston in 1776, Common Sense and The American Crisis, were responsible for the Continental Congresses united decision to serve King George with the Declaration of independence and to immediately begin the Colonial Revolution.

He wrote, “As a long and violent abuse of power is generally the means of calling the right of it in question, (and in matters too which might never have been thought of, had not the sufferers been aggravated into the inquiry,) and as the king of England hath undertaken in his own right, to support the parliament in what he calls theirs, and as the good people of this country are grievously oppressed by the combination, they have an undoubted privilege to inquire into the pretensions of both, and equally to reject the usurpations of either.”

A Princess of Mars

Edgar Rice Burroughs was one of the 20th Century's greatest science fiction writers. His Barsoom series was so widely admired that it inspired a number of future greats like Ray Bradbury, and Arthur C. Clarke. Even the astronomer Carl Sagan was heavily influenced by Burrough's intriguing tales of life on other planets.

His Barsoom series begins with the novel A Princess of Mars. This is the story of John Carter, a civil war veteran who is mysteriously telegraphed to Mars while hiding from Indians in a strange cave on Earth. When he miraculously arrives on Mars he finds he has superhuman strength and abilities, and because of them, he is welcomed and revered by the two opposing native factions of Barsoom -- the green Martians and the humanoid red martians. He soon finds himself romantically involved with the beautiful red martian princess, Dejah Thoris of Helium, and politically entangled with both societies in this wild action-packed thriller you won't want to put down.

The Gods of Mars

Edgar Rice Burroughs was one of the 20th Century's greatest science fiction writers. One of the best of his works is the Barsoom fantasy series which begins with its first novel A Princess of Mars. This novel is a must read to complete the John Carter, Barsoom trilogy.

The Gods of Mars, second in the series, begins where A Princess of Mars leaves off. After spending 10 years on the Earth, John Carter finally returns to Barsoom to be with his beautiful wife, the Princess Dejah Thoris. Upon arriving, however, things do not go as planned and Captain Carter finds himself in a strange area of Barsoom he has never seen, the Valley Dor. There he meets up with his old friend Tars Tarkas, a green Martian chieftain. They are immediately embroiled in a fierce battle to save their lives from the hostiles in the valley. This second tale is a non-stop action-packed thriller with a cliff-hanger ending, setting up the third book in the trilogy, The Warlord of Mars.

The Warlord of Mars

Far to the north, in the frozen wastes of Polar Mars, lay the home of the sacred Holy Therns. Only John Carter dares to go there to find and rescue the love of his life, Dejah Thoris. But between him and his goal lay the bones of all who had gone before him forever strewn over this frozen Marian wasteland.

After the epic battle at the end of Edgar Rice Burroughs' The Gods of Mars, John Carter's wife and two other women are captured and imprisoned in a slowly rotating and seemingly inescapable prison cell attached to the Temple of the Sun. Through interrogation, John Carter discovers in his band a martian named Thurid who knows the secrets of this Temple. Once these secrets are revealed to the group, several Martian nations band together to rescue the Holy Thern's daughter Phaidor and Carter's wife Dejah Thoris. Like the other two books in the trilogy, the Warlord of Mars is a non-stop thrill ride that you will find difficult to put down.
